The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) was established in February 1996 as a non-profit foundation (NPO) to promote R&D in the space field in Catalonia. The IEEC is a research institute that studies all areas of knowledge and develops technologies applied to the space sector and space sciences, including astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, Earth observation, navigation and space engineering. Its mission is to push the frontiers of space research from the scientific and technological aspects for the maximum benefit of society. It should also be noted that the Foundation is attached to the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government) and belongs to its institutional public sector, since the Generalitat has a majority in the IEEC Board of Trustees.

Introducció

The IEEC and the Generalitat de Catalunya promote the New Space through the definition and execution of the New Space Strategy of Catalonia to strengthen the space ecosystem through the launch of nanosatellite missions, research and innovation programs and high value-added services based on space technologies.

One of these nanosatellite missions is PhotSat, a 12U CubeSat that will scan the sky and extract photometry of the brightest stars. With two small telescopes developed at the IEEC, PhotSat will be able to observe stars in visible light and also in ultraviolet, while detecting and warning of possible supernovas. With agile development, the satellite is planned to be launched by the end of 2025. The SmartC3 project will develop the Instrument Control Unit of the two small telescopes.

The purpose of this call is the selection process of a candidate to occupy a job position as a software engineer in the SmartC3 project of the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya.

Descripció de la feina

  • Position: 1.Satellite Software engineer for the development of the SmartC3 Payload Computer
  • Professional Group: Group II Engineering staff.
  • Professional Category: Technical engineer
  • Working hours: 37’5 h/week

The IEEC wants to hire a person to contribute to the development of the payload software within the framework of the SmartC3 and Photsat project, from the definition of subsystems requirements to the implementation and validation of the on-board computer software.

The selected person will be in charge of the following functions:

  • Participate in the definition of the software requirements of the various subsystems of the PhotSat Instrument Control Unit (SmartC3), taking into account the instruments to control and the main OBC of the satellite.
  • Interact with the Prime to define the communication protocols between the payload and the satellite platform.
  • Participate in consortium meetings and interact with different teams.
  • Develop the Linux drivers required to control various instruments.
  • Install the drivers and firmware developed on the Linux operating system of the ICU (based on Xilinx Ultrascale+ MPSoC) with help of the SmartC3 Core Team of the IEEC.
  • Execute the Unit Tests and the Functional tests of the Linux Drivers.
  • Coordinate the implementation of the TM/TC layer, the Data Processing Pipeline and the Alert System, in the OS of the ICU, together with the Engineers and Scientists of the PhotSat consortium.
  • Provide technical support for the tests of other subsystems: design, implementation and programming of various Electronic Ground Segment Equipment for the AIV/AIT campaigns.

Requisits de participació i criteri de selecció

The candidates will be evaluated based on the following criteria, ordered from most to least relevant:

  • Degree in Computer Engineering (or similar degrees) or Master in Embedded Systems (or similar masters).
