Providing opportunities for students and young researchers
The IEEC supports students and young researchers to develop their professional careers, whether in academia or industry. In this sense, the IEEC provides opportunities for students interested in space sciences and space technology, from secondary school to university level (bachelor, master, and PhD), and participates in specialised courses and workshops.
Secondary School
Summer fellowships
There are educational programmes that allow secondary school students to spend a few weeks working with an expert researcher within a specific field of study, experiencing in situ the tasks, achievements, and difficulties that a researcher encounters on a daily basis.
These stays are usually established through agreements between the administration and the Institute, thanks to various programmes such as Youth and Science or Crazy about Physics.Â
If you are a high school student interested in space science and space technology, please contact us at the following e-mail address comunicacio@ieec.cat.
‘Young Researchers’ Competition (CSIC)
The ‘Young Researchers’ competition aims to awaken vocations among secondary school students and members of various associations. This programme aims to improve scientific literacy as well as to foster a critical and rational approach in young students, allowing them to have a direct experience in the process of knowledge generation by spending two weeks in a research institute or a company.
DEGREE
External internships
Undergraduate students can carry out an external internship course with companies, services or institutes. The main objective of these internships is to introduce them to the workplace, offering them a possible future insertion in the labour market.
The IEEC has agreements with most of the universities in Catalonia.
If you are a student and you are interested in doing this type of internship, you can contact an IEEC researcher and follow the procedures established by the school or department that coordinates external internships.
JAE-INTRO (CSIC)
The JAE-INTRO programme is aimed at second, third and/or fourth year undergraduate students. The aim of the programme is to offer students with an excellent academic record the possibility of practical experience in industry or a research institute, working in a professional environment for a short period of time. The call for applications is usually opened at the end of the previous year, at which time students can choose the centre they are interested in applying to according to their area of interest. The duration of the internship is two months and the student can coordinate with the researcher to carry out the internship during the summer (June, July, August or September).
master
These programmes aim to engage the student in research activity and professional training, and provide the basic tools to embark on a research career.
Students will be able to choose from a wide variety of programmes, depending on their specific field of interest. They can be accessed through the following links:Â
Master’s degree in Astrophysics, Particle Physics, and Cosmology
Master’s degree in high-energy physics, astrophysics, and cosmology
Master’s degrees at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech
Phd
If you have a master’s degree in the field of physics, engineering, space science, astronomy or science in general, and you are interested in pursuing doctoral studies, you can apply for one of the grants funded by the Administration through public calls for applications.
FPI (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities)
FPI grants are linked to specific research projects, which are financially supported by the ‘National R&D&I Plan’, among others, and are aimed at students who want to obtain their PhD in any field of knowledge.
FPU (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities)
FPU grants promote teaching and research training within the framework of the researcher’s personal research. It is a personal grant, unlike the FPI grant associated with research projects
FI (Generalitat de Catalunya)
The ‘Grants for the recruitment of new research staff’ (FI) are mainly aimed at the incorporation of doctoral students in official doctoral programmes, with the objective of including them in individual research projects or in research groups that are developing R&D projects. In order to apply for this grant, the student must be enrolled in the research phase of a doctoral programme at the time of acceptance of the grant.
If you are a foreign student, here are some tips that may help you when you move to Spain/Catalonia to start your doctoral studies:
FIRST
Homologation of diploma
All foreigners must validate their most recent international degree (high school degree, bachelor’s, master’s) through the Spanish Ministry of Education, by means of the process known as ‘Homologación de TÃtulo Extranjero’.
SECOND
Hague Apostille
Depending on the nationality of your degree, as a preliminary step, you will need to have your original degree stamped with the Hague Apostille (Hague Convention countries) and officially translated into Spanish.
THIRD
It is not necessary to have your degree validation completed at the time of starting your doctoral thesis, simply because the process can take from several months to more than a year to complete.

Internal call for proposals 2021
This is an internal competitive call to provide seed funding to a high potential and high impact project, proposed by the IEEC Direction and approved by the CERCA Institution.
The main objectives of the call are to stimulate collaboration between the IEEC members and groups, and to promote innovative proposals through feasibility studies and proofs of concept that will help to increase their degree of maturity and enable them to obtain future funding.
