The limits of AI in space travel, IEEC’s food for thought at 24th Science Week 2019

The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC — Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) joins the celebrations of the Science Week (Setmana de la Ciència), taking place on 8-17 November 2019, with a debate about artificial intelligence (AI).

On 13 November 2019, AI expert Dr. Ramon López de Mántaras (IIIA-CSIC) and space expert Dr. Jordi Isern (ICE-CSIC/IEEC) will talk about the impact of artificial intelligence on interplanetary human spaceflight, as well as the ethical boundaries and implications for human beings. A dialogue at the frontier between science and philosophy, taking place at such a symbolic moment: 50 years after the first step on the Moon, humanity is preparing its future trip to Mars.

The debate “Artificial Intelligence and the Exploration of Space: from the Moon to Mars” will take place at Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), on 13 November 2019, between 19:00 and 21:00h. Moderated by journalist Núria Jar, the discussion will be suitable for both specialised and general public. The event is organised by IEEC in collaboration with the Institute of Space Science (ICE-CSIC) and the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC), which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Free admission.

The 24th edition of Science Week in Catalonia will host a range of activities dedicated to scientific dissemination: open days, exhibitions, talks, games, scientific workshops.
