The 6th CASSINI Hackathon comes to Barcelona putting space at the service of international development and humanitarian aid
How can EU space technology benefit international development and humanitarian aid? This is the question the 6th CASSINI Hackathon addresses, which will be held from 3 to 5 November 2023 in Barcelona (Baix Llobregat Campus, Castelldefels). The aim of this edition is to show how data generated by Earth Observation and satellite navigation technologies (GNSS) can support important global challenges related to climate change, population flow and water management, among others.
With the theme ‘Space for International Development & Humanitarian Aid’, the Hackathon will be held online and in-person at 11 locations in Europe. This is an exciting opportunity for entrepreneurs, students, engineers, designers and business specialists to collaborate on a space project, with no need of experience in the sector.
The Catalan Edition will be hosted by four co-organisers: Fundació Privada Knowledge Innovation Market (KIMbcn), the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) and the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC). In addition, we will have the collaboration of the Parc Mediterrani de la Tecnologia (PMT) and the Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering (EETAC) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC), where the event will take place.
Hackathon competitors will use Earth Observation and GNSS technologies to develop their own innovative solutions for one of three challenges:
–Â Â Â Â Â Supporting sustainable infrastructure development.
–Â Â Â Â Â Strengthening food security & access to clean water.
–Â Â Â Â Â Understanding and forecasting forced migration.
Airbus collaborates in this edition of the hackathon by contributing to the prizes for the best projects (2000 euros for the first place, 600 for the second and 400 for the third), as well as providing mentoring support during the event to all the projects that are developed. Moreover, the top three teams across all European hackathons will gain access to CASSINI Mentoring, a 6-month mentoring programme designed to turn their hackathon project into a successful business.
