IEEC joins the celebration of 8M
As the international 2021 campaign theme is #ChooseToChallenge, we want to take the time to recognize all the women at IEEC, challenging the frontiers of knowledge and space science.
At the same time, we want to remember the past challenges that were overcome by women everywhere and the societal imbalance they are still faced with today. While mostly forgotten today, the historical significance of 8 March is to commemorate the feminicide of a group of textile workers who died in 1857, while claiming their labor rights. Also, on 8 March 1917 (according to the Gregorian calendar), Russian women took to the streets to demand food and the return of fighters.
As such, International Women's Day was set for 8 March, to symbolise the struggle of women for their participation, along with men, in the workplace, and therefore for the right to economic independence. It was first celebrated in Spain in 1936, when Dolores Ibárruri led a women's march in Madrid in 1936 on the eve of the Civil War.
As the struggle for gender equality continues even today, as obstacles are still faced by women by the mere fact of being women, at IEEC we are convinced that change is possible.
Happy women’s day!
