IEEC becomes a Galileo Masters 2020 regional partner providing technological mentoring

The submissions for the Galileo Masters 2020 are already open and they will run until 30 June

The competition awards prizes to services, applications and business cases that are using Galileo GNSS data to tackle important challenges 

While completion of the Galileo constellation is still in progress – the launches of the last four Galileo satellites are scheduled for the end of 2020 – the European Space Agency (ESA) is looking ahead to the system’s second generation. The first ideas, first studies, and first technology developments started four years ago. The objective of the Galileo Masters is to foster the development of new business cases, service delivery and applications based on Galileo/EGNOS. In this direction, the Galileo Masters awards prizes to such services, applications and business cases that are using Galileo GNSS data to tackle important challenges faced by business and society. 

This year’s edition of the competition incorporates the brand-new Galileo Prizes powered by the European Commission (EC) in cooperation with various regional or country partners – including well-known space stakeholders –. The main target group of the contest includes SMEs, startups, universities and individuals in the fields of business, research, and higher education, who are welcome to submit their solutions and product solutions. Submissions can demonstrate their innovative use of GNSS data across a wide variety of challenge topics. Each participant needs to choose one Galileo Prize powered by the EC and additionally, if the submission addresses a specific topic that fits to the offered Partner Challenges, a Partner Challenge. Entries opened on 1 April 2020 and will run until 30 June 2020. 

Galileo Prize Catalonia/Spain

The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC  — Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) has become a regional partner of Galileo Masters 2020 by providing technological mentoring to all the participants of the Galileo Prize Catalonia/Spain. IEEC is a pioneer in proposing this figure of mentors who accompany and give feedback to the participants throughout the competition. The Galileo Masters 2020 is a contest nationally organized by AZO and the catalan edition is organized by the ESA’s broker Knowledge Innovation Market (KIM).

Among many others, the several regional rewards of this year’s edition includes ZBM Patents providing a cash prize of EUR 2,000 plus a complete IP consulting session to discuss the possibilities and best strategies for registering patents, trademarks and/or designs in relation to the project; Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) offering a free co-working space at Parc UPC Aerospace Castelldefels Campus; and KIM giving mentoring, access to different training courses, access to funding, marketing support, patent consulting and free access to Catalonia Open Data HUB to the winner..
