ICCUB and ICE activities in the 26th Science Week
Science Week is aimed at all audiences and its main objectives are to bring science and technology closer to the public and to encourage scientific vocations among the youngest.
On the occasion of the present edition, the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC — Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) is taking part with the organization of the virtual talk “Discovering the Universe from Montsec”. In addition, the IEEC Research Units are organising a series of outreach events, where researchers from our institute will participate.
Activities from the Institute of Cosmos Sciences
The Institute of Cosmos Sciences of Universitat de Barcelona (ICCUB) will participate with three activities:
- Toc-Toc talk: ‘Space in cinema: fiction and reality’. We contrast the conquest of space as it appears in the movies with the scientific reality of space exploration.
- By Xavi Luri (ICCUB-IEEC)
- Friday, 12 Nov. at 11 p.m.
- Escola Tècnico Professional Xavier (Barcelona)
- The talk will be held in Catalan.
- ‘Public observation of the moon with the planting of telescopes in La Verneda’. In this activity we will be able to observe our satellite up close, identifying its most prominent relief elements (craters, seas, etc.) in a telescope plant in the neighborhood of La Verneda.
- By Xavi Luri and Eduard Masana (ICCUB-IEEC)
- Friday, 12 Nov. at 8 p.m.
- Plaça la Palmera, La Verneda (Barcelona)
- Workshop ‘3D constellations and virtual walk through the galaxy by the hand of Gaia’. One of the most characteristic constellations of our firmament is Orion. In this workshop you will build the constellation of Orion in three dimensions taking into account the position and distance of each of the stars that make it up. Then you can take a virtual walk through the galaxy with Gaia and discover how Orion looks from different points of view.
- By Eduard Masana (ICCUB-IEEC) and Óscar Jiménez (ICCUB)
- Monday, 15 Nov. at 6 p.m.
- El Mirador, Pl. del Mirador, s/n (Castellar del Vallès)
Every Friday, the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) organises its usual #PizzaSeminars, informal seminars by the centre's research staff and guests related to different lines of research. On the occasion of Science Week, the institute is now holding a special informative edition of these #PizzaSeminars, this time aimed at the general public. The event will take place on 18 November from 5 pm and will include different five-minute micro-talks by junior staff of the institute, as predoctoral and postdoctoral research staff and the ICE engineering team. It will be streamed live on YouTube.
