Catalonia participates in the IAC 2022, the most important congress of the space sector in the world
For the first time, Catalonia will have its own pavilion at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), which celebrates its 73rd edition from 18 to 22 September in Paris

The 'NewSpace Catalonia' booth, promoted by the Department of the Vice Presidency and Digital Policies and Territory of the Catalan Government and the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC), will host 15 entities from the Catalan space ecosystem

The objective is to present the NewSpace Strategy of the Government of Catalonia and the Catalan space sector at an international level, as well as to facilitate spaces for collaboration and international business for participating companies and entities.

Catalonia will participate for the first time with its own pavilion in the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), the most important space congress in the world. With 250 exhibitors and 6,500 participants from all over the world, the IAC celebrates its 73rd edition from 18 to 22 September at the Paris Convention Centre.

Promoted jointly by the Ministry of the Vice-presidency, and Digital Policies and Territory of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) with the collaboration of the i2CAT Foundation and the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC), the NewSpace Catalonia pavilion will host a total of 15 companies and entities from the Catalan space ecosystem in a 108 m2 space located in a prominent place at the fair.

Moreover, the 4 promoting entities of the NewSpace Strategy of Catalonia will be present at this booth: Government of Catalonia (Digital Policies), IEEC, i2CAT and ICGC, which will have a differentiated exhibition space where they will explain the main lines and objectives of the strategy and will exhibit the models of Enxaneta (the first nanosatellite of the Strategy put into orbit by the Catalan Government in March 2021) and Menut (which means small), the second nanosatellite, which will be launched into space this year.

In addition, the pavilion will host 11 companies of the Catalan space sector, each of which will have a small booth to display their products and services. The companies, all of them members of the NewSpace Community of the Digital Catalonia Alliance (DCA), are Compoxi, Fregata Space, Gutmar, isardSAT, Lobelia Earth, Kreios Space, Pangea Aerospace, Sateliot, Satellogic, SpaceSUR and Telstar.

The participation of the Catalan delegation in this international event, led by the Generalitat de Catalunya with the support of the IEEC, has a double objective: to project the Government's NewSpace Strategy and the Catalan space ecosystem internationally and to encourage the participating Catalan companies to carry out business and establish international contacts as part of an innovative ecosystem.

Thus, in addition to participating in activities of the congress itself, the Catalan delegation will organise other activities of its own, such as meetings with delegations, agencies and companies from other countries and networking events at the NewSpace Catalonia booth to connect the global ecosystem with Catalan companies participants. At an institutional level, the Catalan delegation will be led by the Government's Secretary for Digital Policies, David Ferrer, accompanied by the General Director of Innovation and Digital Economy, Dani Marco.

About the IAC 2022
Organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) with the local collaboration of the Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), the 73rd edition of the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) will take place from 18 to 22 September at the Paris Convention Centre. Paris hosted the first IAC in history (in 1950) and will become, with this new edition, the one that has hosted the space congress the most times, since it also hosted it in 1963 and 1982.

During the 5 days of the congress (one of them, the Public Day—21 September—, dedicated to the general public) and under the slogan 'Space for @ll', the IAC 2022 wants to bring together all the space communities, ecosystem emerging global and start-ups, entrepreneurs, laboratories, scientific researchers and manufacturers that could participate in or benefit from space activities. It will also include events dedicated to students and young professionals and space-themed conferences and exhibitions for the general public.

The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC  — Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) promotes and coordinates space research and technology development in Catalonia for the benefit of society. IEEC fosters collaborations both locally and worldwide and is an efficient agent of knowledge, innovation and technology transfer. As a result of 25 years of high-quality research, done in collaboration with major international organisations, IEEC ranks among the best international research centers, focusing on areas such as: astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, and Earth Observation. IEEC’s engineering division develops instrumentation for ground- and space-based projects, and has extensive experience in working with private or public organisations from the aerospace and other innovation sectors.

IEEC is a private non-profit foundation, governed by a Board of Trustees composed of Generalitat de Catalunya and four other institutions that each have a research unit, which together constitute the core of IEEC R&D activity: the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) with the research unit ICCUB — Institute of Cosmos Sciences; the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) with the research unit CERES — Center of Space Studies and Research; the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) with the research unit CTE — Research Group in Space Sciences and Technologies; the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) with the research unit ICE — Institute of Space Sciences.
