Guided tours to the Montsec Observatory are back
One more year, the Montsec Observatory (OdM) organises guided tours to its facilities. Managed by the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC — Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya), the OdM is a state-of-the-art scientific infrastructure, which is normally reserved for scientific use and, therefore, is closed to the public. But several days a year, the Observatory opens its doors so that the general public can visit it.

The session consists of a tour to the Observatory's infrastructures. It will be able to see the three robotic telescopes—the Joan Oró telescope, the Fabra-ROA Montsec telescope and the XO-Montsec telescope—, as well as the automatic station of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC) and the environmental quality measurement station of the Air Pollution Monitoring and Forecasting Network (Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research). In addition, it will also be possible to see the Satellite Ground Station (SGS Montsec) for low orbit satellite communications, installed and managed by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) and the IEEC.

IEEC astronomers will explain how the equipment works, what scientific discoveries have been made recently from the Observatory, and how communication with nanosatellites is carried out.

The guided tours of this 2022 will be held on the following days:

  • Sunday, 3 July at 12 pm
  • Sunday, July 17th at 12 pm
  • Sunday, 31 July at 12 pm
  • Sunday, 14 August at 12 pm

The visit lasts approximately one hour and is free. As places are limited, prior registration is required through this form.
